Frequently asked questions

Why should one use organic cotton in baby and children's clothing?
Conventional cotton clothes contain pesticide residues as well as many chemicals used in the fin'sh of the cotton. The dangerous pesticides end up on the baby.s skin through direct contact from the very clothes he or she wears, and can absorbed by the body through the skin. These chemicals affect many infan's and children. Not only does conventional cotton negatively impact babies. health, but also it seriously affects our environment. Cotton pesticides contaminate our ground and surface water. Birds are killed from aerial spraying, and fish are killed from pesticides polluting streams and rivers.

How do we make the colors for our dyes?
We dye our yarn and material with colors that are free of heavy metal and harmful chemicals, and in accordance with Demeter standard. Our dyes do not contain PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride). PVC is a dangerous chemical used in the conventional dyeing process and has been'shown to cause kidney failure, developmental delays, and even hearing loss in children. Our aim is to use only agen's and processes that are environmentally sound and ensure the highest quality standard.

Why is organic cotton'softer then conventional cotton?
In order to get the soft feel that organic cotton is known for, we handle the cotton yarn with great care during the knitting or weaving process. All auxiliaries used must either be recyclable or be biodegradable to at least 90%. For example, we only use natural starch during the weaving process.

Do we use bleach to get the white color?
No, we do not use bleach. Sometimes the cotton harvest of a particular year is more on the yellow side. To achieve our white color we only apply a natural whitening process using peroxide.

Do we use chemical fin'shin's on the fabrics?
No, we do not use chemical fin'shin's on our fabrics. One of the most dangerous chemicals found in the fin'shing of conventional fabrics is Formaldehyde. Babies and children are very sensitive to this chemical. It can cause skin rashes, coughing, and flu-like symptoms in children wearing clothes fin'shed with it.

What kind of detergent should I use on organic cotton?
Use a detergent that does not contain chlorine, phosphates, dyes, or phenols, just all-natural ingredien's. There are many bran's; however, we believe the best one available is from "Seventh Generation". This company is reputable and has been on the market for a long time.

Do we use flame retardant on our products?
No, we do not use flame retardant on any of our products. All of our long johns meet Federal Safety Commission requiremen's for sleep wear and are made to be fit snugly to ensure safety.

How can customers be sure they are receiving "certified" organic cotton?
All of our products carry the "Demeter" certified logo. This ensures that customers are purchasing a certified organic cotton product. If a product says .natural,. .pure,. or .green,. this does not mean that is certified organic. This just means that no toxins, dyes, bleaches or fin'shin's were added to conventional cotton.
Underthenile is Demeter certified and is certified to the National Organic Program Standards
