About Janice, owner of Underthenile
|
 |
 |
Janice Masoud launched Under the Nile in 1998 with a vision of bringing
organic baby clothing into the mainstream. Today, her company's products
can found in more than 10,000 retailers across the world. Thanks to ten
consecutive years of 30+ percent growth, the Under the Nile brand has
come to symbolize the best of the organic movement: A care for others, a
care for the environment and a care for company success all acting in
harmony.
Like many aspiring designers, Janice started in production working for
Eber of California and Eileen West. Later, Canterbury of New Zealand
hired her with design responsibilities in 1994. It was during this time
that Janice noticed her children's skin was sensitive to certain cotton
clothing products. Upon further research, she discovered that different
elements such as dyes are introduced into cotton that can cause skin
reactions particularly with babies and toddlers. Her research also
pointed her toward Egypt which grows the best cotton in the world, a
nice piece of serendipity since her husband Mohammed is Egyptian.
The duo traveled to Egypt in search of organic cotton, a trek that led
them to the SEKEM Initiative Farm, a model community for biodynamic
agriculture and a belief system that aligned with Under the Nile. A
partnership was formed, setting the stage for Under the Nile as Janice
embarked on designing the company's first collection.
Today, the Under the Nile collection includes over 200 products ranges
from bibs to toddler dresses to toy fruits and vegetables all formed
from 100 percent organic cotton carrying the USDA Organic seal. These
products have attracted the attention of the Hollywood set with
actresses Laura Dern, Courtney Cox and Kelly Preston to name a few
turning to Under the Nile.
Janice has a BFA in fashion design from Stephen College (1983) in
Columbia, Missouri.

How Veggies are helping villages
|
 |
 |
By participating in the 13-Villages-Project, organic toy manufacturer, Under the Nile, is doing
more than just providing healthy toys for customers -- they're also providing healthier living
conditions for impoverished people in Egypt.
Under the Nile, manufacturer of organic toys and apparel, is doing
more than just helping kids make a positive association with healthy foods. They are also proud
participants of the 13-Villages-Project -- a SEKEM initiative to fight against poverty and its causes in
rural Egypt. Under the Nile's "Veggin' Out" collection of stuffed fruits and vegetables are made
exclusively through this program.
Janice Masoud, President of Under the Nile, joined the 13-Villages-Project because she believes as they
do.that poverty cannot be addressed solely through financial aid. So while many manufacturers choose
to give a portion of their proceeds to underprivileged countries, charities, and so forth, Masoud wanted to
do more than just donate. She wanted to part of the solution.
Here is what she's done:
