Five Things You Should Know Before Buying Organic
Organic products are hot right now, but Janice Masoud, of Under the Nile, says consumers
should be educated before buying organic fiber products to avoid confusion.
Milpitas, CA, November 8, 2006 - With over ten years in the organic infant and children's apparel
industry, Janice Masoud, President of Under the Nile, says consumers should be educated before
buying organic products to be sure the goods they purchase are truly organic. Masoud offers these five tips:
1. Only cotton fiber identified as 'certified organic' truly follows an organic process from start to finish-from
planting and growing the cotton to spinning, weaving, dying, and sewing the garment. Products that say,
'natural', 'pure', or 'green', indicate that no toxins, dyes, bleaches, or finishing treatments were applied
to conventional (non-organic) cotton.
2. Clothing made from organic fiber should be washed in an all-natural laundry detergent to maintain the benefits
of buying a chemical-free product in the first place.
3. Organic clothing does not have to be oatmeal-colored or tie-dyed to camouflage the yellow tinge sometimes
indicative of naturally-grown cotton. Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bleaching agent that can be used to
whiten organic fibers and with all-natural, low-impact dyes, organic clothing can be made just as fun and
colorful as mainstream clothing.
4. Don't sacrifice comfort, fashion, or price to buy organic. Although organic textiles are traditionally
quite soft, organic clothing hasn.t always been stylish or cost-effective to buy. But thanks to increasing
consumer interest in organic products, manufacturers are designing clothing that looks as good as it feels
and selling it both in specialty stores and mass merchandisers at an affordable price.
5. For the purist, notions such as buttons and zippers can also be made from organically-friendly elements such
as wood, shell or nickel-free metals.
